Welcome to Leadership Lab with Wendy Hultmark!

This is a monthly newsletter where I share light-bite content on a variety of topics related to leadership in today’s world and times.  Whether in the sciences or creative spaces, the word lab has come to be associated with a space for experimentation, innovation, and collaboration.

In this space, I will share tips worth passing on, words I have found worthy of reflection, and the occasional funny story to keep it all in perspective.

We grow further together.

Self-sufficiency is great, folks, but it only gets you so far.   That is why I created Beyond The Bench, for scientists who want to navigate their toughest professional challenges and grow further together.  You don’t have to have it all figured out (and it would be pretty creepy if you did, actually).  Thinking about whether this community is for you?  Drop me a line to get more information.  You won’t want to miss it–spots are filling up!

A Day In the Life.

Yes, ma’am!

Me and the Ashford Inc leadership group.

For the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching on the topic of psychological safety, trust and engagement with SMU’s Women in Leadership professional ed certificate program.  A few weeks ago, they asked me to come down to Texas and share the content with a group of leaders at the Ashford Group.  They were really into it and I got to experience the great hospitality and food that Texas is known for.    And, I must say, I don’t mind being called ma’am when it’s by someone other than a teenager!

Now that’s commitment

Recently I attended the Women’s Networking Summit, hosted by PGA and Women’s Business League.  Golf, with its long walks (or rides) and sprawling scenery, has long been a networking superpower for businessmen.  I love that this annual event makes golf more accessible to women.  Whereas last year the weather for this event was sunny and warm, this year we were not so lucky.  I loved the comment I got on my LinkedIn post to this photo: “Now that’s commitment, Wendy!”  What can I say? I like to bring it.

Work with me here.

Job Seekers’ Office Hours

On Fridays during the month of May, from 12 to 1 pm EST, I will host free office hours for job seekers. You can register for the May 16th session right here. During this drop-in-style Zoom meeting, bring questions about your LinkedIn profile, interview preparation, negotiation, and more.

Beyond the Bench

Beyond The Bench is a unique private community where scientists can connect across disciplines for peer advice and leadership development.  Give and get advice from people who understand your world, as well as leadership and career development strategies to sustain your professional path forward.   Meetings are twice-monthly, and participation is curated and capped at 10 people, to ensure the meetings are useful for all.  To learn more and apply, visit www.wendyhultmark.com/beyond-the-bench.

Coaching for Amirah is coming in June!

I’m proud to have joined Amirah’s Board of Directors this year because of their powerful mission and tremendous impact in women’s lives. If you are not familiar, Amirah helps women leave behind the exploitation of the sex trade by offering housing, counseling, job readiness training and more. Eighty-four percent of people trading sex do not do so by choice–most say the would leave if they could. Sadly, fewer than 1% do. So the need is great and the work is both life-changing and life-saving.

In a couple of weeks I will kick off my Move for Amirah campaign, where I am committing to move 150,000 steps throughout June. In support of that campaign, I’ll be offering a special coaching package: three sessions for a $350 donation to my Move for Amirah campaign. To learn more, email me at wendy@wendyhultmark.com.

In closing…

How will you meet this moment?

We often associate career success with what we are doing.  And it’s no wonder—from our earliest years we became accustomed to answering the question “what do you want to be when you grow up?”

A better question to ask may be “who do you want to be when you grow up?”.  We are facing a time when many people’s professional identities are at risk, with jobs suddenly in a tenuous position, and big questions about what is going to be valued moving forward.  How you meet the moment becomes as important, if not more important, than the work that you are doing.

When times are challenging, a moment to reflect on who you want to be to the people around you goes a long way. In my experience, that “who”–and not what you did–is all people will remember a year from now anyway.
